Article 55: Manner of election of President

In plain words

The election of the President uses a system that keeps the States' representation uniform and balances the States as a whole with the Union. Voting is by proportional representation using the single transferable vote, by secret ballot.

  • Each elected State MLA's vote value is the State's population divided by its number of elected MLAs, divided by one thousand, with one more added if the remainder is five hundred or more.
  • Each elected MP's vote value is the total value of all MLAs' votes divided by the number of elected MPs, with fractions over one-half counted as one.
  • Population is taken from the 1971 census until figures from the first census after 2026 are published.
