Constitution of India · Part IXA: The Municipalities

Article 243U: Duration of Municipalities, etc

In plain words

Every Municipality lasts five years from its first meeting unless dissolved sooner under law, and must be given a reasonable opportunity to be heard before dissolution. Amending a law cannot dissolve a functioning Municipality before its term ends.

  • Elections must be completed before the term ends, or within six months of a dissolution. No election is needed if less than six months of the term would remain.
  • A Municipality formed after an early dissolution serves only the rest of the dissolved Municipality's term.
